A Michigan cybersecurity business is getting a boost from both public and private entities to develop cybersecurity technology that protects the electric grid and electric vehicle infrastructure. The Dream Team will receive a collective $7 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy and an industry match.
- The first-of-its-kind vehicle-to-grid technology will be designed to protect the electric grid from cyberattacks on electric vehicles and EV charging systems, aiming to detect attacks in real time and take action to limit grid attacks.
- Once the technology is developed, it will be tested at the American Center for Mobility in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to ensure it is properly developed and implemented.
- The technology will be compatible with existing EV charging systems and new technologies, such as wireless charging.
- “Dream Team is committed to developing and transitioning technology that improves the safety, security and reliability of the grid by changing the way that power is delivered, bought, and sold,” Duncan Woodbury, The Dream Team CEO, said in a news release. “We are on a mission with the DOE and its leading national laboratories, industry, and academia to democratize access to new energy markets and to de-risk investments and widespread adoption of renewable and sustainable energy systems.”
💰 FUNDING: DOE also will provide $65 million in funding for projects that expand the network of smart, grid-interactive, efficient buildings. DOE intends to share technical and market solutions that will increase demand flexibility and energy efficiency through the “connected community” projects it selects.
- The renewable energy segment of Akron, Ohio-based Babcock & Wilcox signed a partnership agreement with Eos Energy Storage to sell and service Eos’ patented zinc battery for utility- and industrial-scale energy storage.

- Columbus, Indiana-based Cummins is partnering with Duke Energy, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and the city of Seymour, Indiana, for more than $25 million in upgrades at its Seymour engine plant, which will bring new next-generation engines to market.
🌱 AGRICULTURE: Agtech company Farmers Business Network — co-headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and San Carlos, California — is launching the FBN Biological On-Farm R&D Network to connect agtech developers directly with farmers and testing spaces. The program will aid product commercialization while driving sustainable farming practices.
📈 EXPANSION: Rolls Royce is investing $13.9 million to expand its Mankato, Minnesota, MTU power generation manufacturing facility, which will include a new R&D center. The increased capacity will help to meet the growing demand for power products and advance the company’s capability to manufacture gas generator systems that run on flexible fuels.

- Several Michigan cleantech startups are participating in the new cohort of Lakeshore Advantage’s SURGE Boostcamp. Participants include Aviation Engine Analyzer, which analyzes engine efficiency data, and Ignight Lights, a patented solar lighting product.
- Case Western Reserve University student startup STARS Sensor won first place in the Clean Energy Trust’s University Accelerator program for its self-powered sensor device and software dashboard that enables industrial predictive maintenance.
